Ukrainian Defense Ministry official suggests Russia altered leaked Pentagon documents

A Ukrainian Defense Ministry intelligence representative has accused Russia of tampering with highly classified Pentagon documents leaked online in recent weeks.

“Over the last few decades, Russia’s most successful intelligence operations have been carried out with Photoshop,” Andrii Yusov, a representative of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, said in a nationally televised interview, according to statements posted on the Russia Intelligence website. Russian defense on Saturday.

“Based on a preliminary analysis of these documents, we see false loss figures on both sides. Some of the information clearly comes from open sources,” Yusov said.

The ministry’s intelligence representative said that the needs of the Ukrainian army were “discussed at all levels” and that “it is no secret that Ukraine is asking for planes, tanks, ammunition and other things”.

The comments echo earlier statements by Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, who said on his Telegram channel on Friday that he believed the Russians were behind the alleged leak. Podolyak said the released documents were not authentic, “have nothing to do with Ukraine’s real plans” and were based on “a huge amount of fictitious information”.

As CNN previously reported, bad actors are using the leaked documents to spread misinformation, analysts say. The document with the casualty figures, for example, was amended in recent weeks to more than halve the death toll in Russia, before being broadcast on pro-Russian Telegram channels.

Asked earlier about the images circulating on Twitter and Telegram, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told CNN in a statement that “we do not have the slightest doubt about the direct or indirect involvement of the United States and NATO in the conflict. . between Russia and Ukraine”.

Highly classified Pentagon documents have been leaked online, ranging from US support for Ukraine to information about key US allies such as Israel. Some of the documents, which US officials say are authentic, expose the extent of US wiretapping of key allies including South Korea, Israel and Ukraine.

Some of the documents reveal key weaknesses in Ukraine’s weaponry, air defense and battalion size and readiness at a critical time in the war, as Ukrainian forces prepare to launch a counter-offensive against the Russians – and so will the United States and Ukraine begin to develop a relationship of mutual trust about sharing intelligence.

As CNN previously reported, Ukraine has already changed some of its military plans because of the leak, a source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN.
