the wind has the fire was reactivated this Monday in one of the two critical points of the fire that started last June in Villanueva de Viver, in Castellón, and the extinguishing operations center their work in containing the perimeter and that does not advance towards the Sierra de Espadán, meanwhile it was decided to evacuate 80 vehicles from other three municipalities of the zone.
The prediction of the behavior of the fire led to the enactment of the preventive eviction of Torralba del Pinar, Pavías and Higueras, in addition to the 1,500 residents transferred by the fire in the municipalities of Fuente de la Reina, Puebla de Arenoso, Montanejos, Montán, Arañuel and Villanueva de Viver, and in the districts of Los Calpes, Los Cantos, La Monzona, La Alquería de Montanejos and La Artejuela. In addition, Caudiel’s confinement was decreed due to the presence of smoke in the area.
The fire extinguishing operation is concentrated this afternoon in the CV-195 area (Montán-Montanejos) to prevent the fire from advancing to the Sierra de Espadán and that there are reproductions.
This is the main objective of the work, since the fire remains “very active” and with “great intensity”, with meteorology as the “main enemy” due to gusts of wind, which reactivated small sources that were reduced, as informed by the Minister of Justice, Gabriela Bravo.
Around 20:00, a reconnaissance flight will be carried out to assess the evolution of the fire, which will serve, together with a more accurate meteorological forecast, to set extinction strategy overnight.
Although the evolution of the fire in Castellón the night before was positive -with the same devastated area, 3,800 hectares, and the same perimeter affected, 40 km-, this monday was the worst day from a meteorological point of view, it is the most complicated and dangerous for extinguishing media due to adverse conditions with gusts of more than 50 km/h and humidity below 20%, as indicated by Gabriela Bravo from the Advanced Command Post, established in Quartel.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, advanced on this point today, who guaranteed “all the Government commitment when the flames are extinguished to tackle the task of recovery“.
“The most important thing is that We don’t have to mourn the loss of human life.. With the fire still alive, we have to ask for caution”, said Sánchez, who highlighted solidarity for the reception of the nearly 1,700 homeless due to the fire since last Thursday, both from the cities of Castellón and Teruel.
Sánchez, accompanied by the president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, met with the professionals who run the operation against the flames in the area Up to 23 air assets have been deployed and over 500 ground troops are working with 50 trucks– like the mayors of the affected areas.
“Unfortunately, what wasn’t is starting to become commonplace. It’s March, coming out of winter and this has a lot to do with the climate emergency“, pointed out the president, who has insisted that this emergency “is not future, but current and urgent, and in the face of this problem there is no room for denial, nor for being neutral in the face of who it is “.
According to the PAM, the situation has been very complex, mainly in two “critical points”, one of them located in North zone of the fire, in Fuente de los Bañoswhere air means have operated, mainly seaplanes due to its proximity to the Arenós reservoir, although here the fire advanced slowly.
The second point, the most critical of the two, was during the day in south side of the fire, in Maigmona ravinein Montán, with very adverse weather conditions due to strong winds, low humidity and a very rugged orography that caused it to be activated again.
Between 14:00 and 15:00 there was a fire jump at kilometer 18 of the CV-195 highwaysome very critical moments that put the means mobilized to the test given the voracity of the fire and the proximity of the flames to Montán.
According to Aemet, in a dry and slightly unstable environment like the current one, not only is the ventilation and oxygenation of the fire an adverse factor, but also vertical currents and shear favor the transport of sparks to locations far from the fire.
On the causes that gave rise to the fire, the Government delegate in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, indicated that “the investigation is ongoing and has not ended”.
