(CNN) — And the Oscar for Weirdest Red Carpet Moment 2023 goes to… Hugh Grant.
The “Love Actually” actor was divided among viewers on Sunday after appearing uninterested in questions from model and TV presenter Ashley Graham during chat ahead of the event.
The interview for ABC’s “Countdown to the Oscars” got off to an awkward start when Graham asked Grant what he liked most about going to the Oscars. The 62-year-old actor paused before replying: “It’s fascinating… all of humanity is here, it’s a vanity fair.”
Doing a little more betting, Graham asked Grant if he was excited that either actor could win. Without thinking too much, he replied, “Nobody in particular.”
Grant’s scathing responses followed, though Graham changed the subject to fashion, asking what he was wearing. Grant, known for his irony, said, “Just my suit.”
In an attempt to turn the tide, Graham inquired about Grant’s cameo in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” but it wasn’t enough to save the difficult conversation when he retorted, “Well, I can barely get out. I show up. a few three seconds”.
“Well yeah, but you still showed up and had a good time, right?” Graham begged. “Almost,” admitted Grant, before ending the interview.

The exchange generated divided opinions among users of social networks. While some on Twitter claimed that Grant was simply being authentic in dealing with common questions, others praised him for being kind and persistent despite his obvious desire not to be there.
One person wrote: “Hugh Grant wasn’t rude like so many people have posted, I don’t think the interviewer or people who think he was rude know Hugh Grant. You ask a stupid question and you get a stupid answer.”
Another commented: “Hugh, if you don’t want to be there, go home. One of the worst Oscar interviews.”
Speaking to CNN at the party vanity fair After the event, Graham said, “My mother always told me to defend myself well.” She added that she felt “very supported” after her exchange with Grant started trending on Twitter.
Grant’s deadpan tone was little better onstage when he compared his face to male genitalia as he presented the Oscar for production design alongside his “Four Weddings and a Funeral” co-star Andie MacDowell.
He began the joke by emphasizing “the vital importance of using a good moisturizer”, noting that MacDowell has been using one “for the past 29 years, I’ve never used one in my life”.
Grant then pointed to the 64-year-old MacDowell and said, “She’s still impressive,” before pointing to himself and adding, “Basically a scrotum.” The audience at the star-studded Dolby Theater in Los Angeles erupted in laughter.
